Dhanesh reflected on his time at John Lyon, his university experience and his early career, sharing practical advice on how to prepare for further study and employment. His visit gave students valuable insight into pathways from school to careers in architecture, design and real estate.

After studying Art, Maths and Physics at A-Level, Dhanesh went on to complete a BSc in Architecture at the University of Bath. He explained that his interest in architecture began with observing how buildings look, function and are constructed, encouraging students to develop this curiosity early.

He highlighted that architecture involves much more than drawing and emphasised the importance of developing a broad skill set. His key advice to students included:

  • Build strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Balance creative and technical thinking
  • Learn industry software independently, including CAD, 3D modelling and Photoshop
  • Be proactive in securing work experience and internships
  • Make use of networking opportunities, including alumni connections
  • Develop a professional presence on LinkedIn
  • Research university courses carefully to understand future career pathways

Dhanesh also shared experiences from attending UCL Summer School and working abroad, where he gained confidence through professional challenges and collaboration with industry professionals.

Although trained in architecture, Dhanesh now works in real estate and is developing his own business, demonstrating the wide range of career opportunities an architecture-related degree can offer.

His visit provided students with a clear overview of university study, industry expectations and the importance of initiative.
