Networking with Old Lyonians

Piar talks about his experience of the OL network and how it helped him to find work experience and an internship for this summer.
As a John Lyon student you would have experienced the tight-knit community on the hill and the Old Lyonian network aims to extend this by connecting past and present students.  The support that John Lyon offers does not stop once you have left the school, whether you’re at another academic institution or in full time work, the OL network is a support mechanism for all of us.

In my personal experience, OLs have always been friendly and willing over and above to help me.  My first encounter with OLs was in year 11, whilst playing in the president’s cup, a golf competition between the OLs and current students. Over the 18 holes, we discussed a range of topics but it was very apparent that the OLs were interested in our aims, aspirations and potential careers.  I expressed an interest in surveying and by the end of the post-match dinner a week’s work experience had been organised for me.

With nearly all internships being oversubscribed and companies favouring second year students, it is extremely rare for a first year to be accepted onto one.  My tutor sent me a list of companies that I should apply to, one name stood out.  I thought back to a Friday union speech given by an OL who is a partner at that company.  In my application email, I mentioned the OL and his speech and to my surprise, he remembered that I asked him a couple of questions after.  I’m unsure of the lenths he went to, but I no longer had to complete the multi-phased recruitment process and instead was interviewed by a member of his team.  After a successful interview, this coming summer I will be working for the OL.

Countless OLs are successful and hold positions of influence in their respective fields, they are enthusiastic to help and give current students or OLs an insight into a range of careers.  It can be daunting asking an OL for advice or work experience but the doors they open can alter the path of your career.
