It has been a very busy week at John Lyon, with four of our OLs returning and giving back to the School community.

It was a privilege to welcome back our OLs, enriching our community by sharing their experiences and expertise across various areas of the School. Their commitment to giving back not only inspires our pupils but also strengthens the bond within the John Lyon community.

House Popular Music Competition
The week began on a high note with Bertie Atkinson (OL 2010), returning as a judge for our House Popular Music Competition. In this event, pupils showcase their talents for a coveted spot in the Musician of the Year Final. Bertie is a drummer, as well as an educator, with over 20 years’ experience in both live and studio settings. Notably, he recently demonstrated his talent by playing drums in 'The Addams Family Musical' this past December.

Apprentice Week Insights
Our Goldhawk lecture was aligned to Apprenticeship Week and featured two remarkable alumni: Frankie Bennett (OL 2016) and Robin Goodger (OL 2019). Both OLs provided an engaging overview of their apprenticeship journeys, sharing insights into why they chose this path and how it has shaped their professional lives.

After leaving John Lyon, Frankie successfully completed two apprenticeships. He earned a Level 3 Professional Cooking Qualification whilst working as a chef at The Ivy, and also achieved a Project Management Qualification. He currently works as a coordinator on the development and openings team for a global full-service hotel and resort brand. Robin started career with a Broker Assistant apprenticeship at Arlington Insurance, where he now serves as an Account Handler.

Their presentations offered current students invaluable perspectives on various career prospects, particularly resonating with those navigating the challenges of planning their futures

Talks-on-the-Hill: 'The Power of Why'
Lastly, we were joined by Joseph-Benjamin Cumberbatch (OL 2010) for our annual lecture series, Talks-on-the-Hill. Joseph took this year’s topic of 'The Power of Why' and made it his own by discussing 'Why Diversity, Food and Science Matter'. He is currently the Head of EDI, a Biology teacher, and the founder of Kitchen with Cumbers - a venture that combines his passion and love for food with community engagement. Read more about Joseph's journey in his OL Spotlight.

Thank you again to all our OLs for generously giving their time and continuing to support the John Lyon community. OLs play a crucial role in shaping the aspirations and successes of our students. We invite everyone to keep an eye on upcoming events and join in these opportunities to connect, learn, and grow together.
