The 111th OL Annual Dinner was a resounding success, bringing together over 100 Old Lyonians for an evening filled with friendship, nostalgia, and celebration. In a remarkable first, the event saw nearly every age decade represented from recent leavers aged 18 to distinguished alumni of 80 years plus - reflecting the enduring bond that connects generations of John Lyon students.
The evening began with a school tour delivered by our Sixth Form Prefects, offering guests the chance to revisit familiar corridors and see the School’s latest developments. This was followed by a lively drinks’ reception, where friends reunited, and guests enjoyed a fascinating display of the School’s archive. The exhibit included class photos, sports and expedition snapshots, yearbooks, drama programmes, and more, sparking conversations and fond memories.
Guests were then treated to a wonderful three-course dinner in the New Memorial Hall, where memories were shared over fine food and wine. Rose Hardy, Head, warmly welcomed all in attendance, followed by Paul Matarewicz, OLA President, who led a poignant tribute to the OLs we have lost over the past year.
A special highlight of the evening was the celebration of Alan Bennett (OL 1951), who was honoured in recognition of his 91st birthday. His remarkable legacy and lifelong connection to the School were met with heartfelt applause. A particular thank you to Alan’s son, Duncan, who generously gifted his father the opportunity to return to John Lyon, travelling all the way from Leicestershire - a true testament to the strength and longevity of the OL community.
The evening became even more memorable when everyone joined in a spirited rendition of the School Song, "40 Years On", with voices old and young united in a powerful display of School spirit.
A special thank you to Sarah and her catering team for their exceptional service. Guests were full of praise for the flavourful menu and seamless hospitality, which added to the evening’s enjoyment.
The dinner was a true celebration of shared memories, enduring friendships, and the lasting impact of a John Lyon education. A heartfelt thank you to all who attended and contributed to making the evening so special. Here’s to many more reunions and cherished memories in the years ahead!
