Innovation and creativity are two of the values which John Lyon aims to foster in its boys - qualities which have been shown in abundance by a group of young OLs who have banded together to create their own theatre company, the John Lyon Young Players. Their first play, written and directed by Old Lyonians (leavers of 2016 and 2017), The Arrival Of The Prince, will debut on 20 September.
Ethan Peters, the play's author, is currently studying English and Theatre Studies at Warwick University. Inspired and encouraged by Samuel Jones, John Lyon's Head of Drama, Ethan Peters sat down to write his first play at the start of last summer. He speaks of the freedom he felt writing for himself but is also immensely grateful for the School's support in his endeavour.
Every other aspect of the play has also been the work of Old Lyonians, from the direction to the set design, from the costumes to the technical support. The actors are all current pupils.
The play is set in a dystopian, godless future, opening with a group of kids waiting by the side of a motorway for a prince to arrive. The curtain will go up in the Boyd Campbell Hall on 20 and 21 September at 7:00pm. Tickets are £3-£5 (click here to book).
Old Lyonians are most warmly invited to come along and support the John Lyon Young Players. There will be refreshments before the performance and at the interval.
It would also be a very good opportunity for those recent leavers on their way back to university, or going for the first time, to get together at the School and later at the Castle pub for the last time before the hard work starts again.
