THREE memories of Mr George Weedon
I joined JL school in the second year in Sept 1953 (simultaneously with Mr Boyd- Campbell, both 'new boys'!)
George Weedon was responsible for football as well as GYM and in my very first session asked the class 'who can name the positions on the field?'
One Alan Watson immediately sprang up but faltered before all positions were named, I stepped in and completed the list. 'Right Sexton, GEORGE said, you're Captain' !! which I fulfilled for a couple of years!
I might add that was the last and one and only time I ever got the better of the late great Alan Watson who is so well remembered and revered now through his long history with the school and OL's.
On another occasion George administered vigorously the slipper to my posterior because I would not do the THROUGH VAULT correctly. He did apologise later when I pointed out it was a physical impossibility because I had abnormally short arms!
For the 2012 London Olympics and the start of the Gymnastics he was interviewed in the BBC morning TV studio and at the age of 93 demonstrated he could still do numerous moves from his 1948 Olympic routine!
How's that for a HERO!
