Toby’s aspiration to pursue a career in medicine developed early and has been shaped by curiosity, commitment and a strong sense of purpose. In Lower Sixth, he became fascinated by the workings of the human body, however his interest was first sparked at the age of 13, through watching medical TV show 'House', which encouraged him to explore the science behind diagnosis and treatment.
At 16, Toby sought out hospital experience; this early exposure allowed him to gain valuable insight into the realities of healthcare and emphasied the importance of compassion, resilience and responsibility, as well as academic strength. He quickly came to understand that medicine is not simply a subject to be studied but a highly demanding lifestyle. After John Lyon, Toby went on to study Medicine abroad at the University of Nicosia Medical School in Cyprus. From his first year, clinical experience played a central role in his training, giving him the opportunity to use his theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Over the last six years, he completed more than 45 placements, taking on greater responsibility each time and developing his confidence.
Toby is now working in neurosurgical research and continues to be driven by his interest in anatomy and the precision of surgery. He highlighted to our Lower Sixth and Biomed students the importance of lifelong learning, curiosity, determination and how to make the most of the opportunities you are given.
Toby’s journey reflects the values at the heart of a John Lyon education: curiosity, ambition and a willingness to embrace challenge. His experiences demonstrates the importance of early engagement and a commitment to personal growth can prepare students to thrive in demanding and rewarding careers beyond school.
