"The Old Lyonians 2nd XI cricket team were playing at home against an old boys team from another school. I cannot remember who the opponents were.
It was a Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1961, 1962 or 1963. (I know it was a Saturday because Phil Davies only played cricket for the Old Lyonians on Saturdays.) I was the official scorer for the game.
Dennis Leach hit a ball high out into the mid-on fielding area. It was heading straight for a fielder so Dennis turned around and started to walk off in the direction of the clubhouse, assuming he was going to be caught. Phil Davies (my French teacher at John Lyon) started running from the non-striker’s end in case the ball was dropped and did not notice that Dennis was not running and in fact was now five or six yards beyond the wicket keeper.
Phil yelled at Dennis and stopped running when the fielder dropped the ball. The bowler called for the fielder to throw the ball to the bowler’s end and Phil was run out by more than half the pitch.
Dennis stood stunned by what had happened then watched – and heard – as Phil Davies walked off the field very angry at the whole incident, especially as he was the one who was run out, not Dennis.
I had seen Phil Davies angry occasionally previously but his anger on this occasion lasted for weeks. I don’t know how long it was before Phil would even talk to Dennis again, if ever.Everyone else who witnessed the incident had trouble keeping the smile off their face."
Although there weren't any pictures of this particular game or team, we did come across a photo of the 1st XI 1965 OL team.
