Remembrance

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Malcolm Ames, who died peacefully on 8 September 2026, shortly after celebrating his 92nd birthday.

Malcolm had recently been admitted to hospital with a chest infection and sadly, his condition deteriorated unexpectedly, and was transferred to a hospice, where he passed peacefully.

For Malcolm, John Lyon School remained a cherished and defining part of his life for more than seven decades. He was immensely proud of his connection with the School, both as a former pupil and through his many years of dedicated service as a Governor. He followed the School's progress with great interest and affection and was deeply disappointed that mobility difficulties prevented him from attending the School's 150th anniversary celebrations earlier this year.

Joining the School in 1945, Malcolm made an immediate impression through his sporting achievements. A gifted all-round athlete, he represented John Lyon in football as an inside forward, excelled in athletics with high jump as his speciality, and was a talented cricketer, recognised both as a batsman and bowler. His cricketing ability saw him represent Middlesex Young Amateurs, while his love of sport also extended to tennis and golf.

Peter Freund, friend of Malcom shared ‘Following school, Malcolm qualified as a Chartered Accountant and enjoyed a successful career in the City before establishing his own business. His professional accomplishments were matched by a lifelong commitment to the Old Lyonian (OL) community. Malcolm played football for the OL first team, holding the role of captain for many years. He was a regular supporter of OL events and gatherings, served as Chairman of OL Athletic Club for a considerable period, and was later recognised as a Vice President in acknowledgement of his outstanding service and commitment.’

Malcolm leaves behind his wife, Karen, his daughter, Debra, and a wide circle of family, friends and fellow Old Lyonians who will miss him greatly.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Malcolm's family and friends at this difficult time.
