49ers reunion

Seventy years after their first days at John Lyon School, a group known as the 49ers returned to see their old school.

Reunions
For the last few years, the "49ers" have been meeting every year at the Liberal Club to catch up, a tradition begun by their former head boy, Michael Burrell, who has since sadly passed away.  To mark the 70 year anniversary since they started at what was then called the Lower School of John Lyon, we invited them to return to School.  It was wonderful to be with a group a friends catching up over lunch and taking a stroll down memory lane.

The day started with a cup of coffee or three and some delicious cake, supplied not by Top or Bottom Missus but our wonderful in-house caterers.  A tour of the School followed, led by Sports Prefect Robin Goodger, who guided us round the buildings new and old.

The "Pride of Lyons" choir sang the new school song and a couple of barber shop pieces in the Boyd Campbell Hall, which allowed a brief chance to sit down - albeit at exam desks, it being the season for public examinations.  Luckily, all the OLs at the reunion passed with flying colours!  The School song was accompanied by Huw Jones, Head of Music, playing the digital Wyvern organ so kindly donated by the 49er David Reeves.

Lunch in the new School dining room was followed by a minibus trip to Sudbury to watch a little cricket before the day ended, all too quickly.

We very much hope that more of the 49ers will be able to meet together next year - Oxford was suggested as a possible alternative meeting place to London.

More photos of the event can be seen in the linked gallery pictures, here.
